Studies of Firemen of Sarasota

I wanted to do some documenting and some connections with some local folk. So it was either between firemen and fishermen for I wanted to get started on my senior project, which will be naturalistic oil paintings of people and their passions in unique environments. So I decided on firemen, and went to the nearest fire station only a few blocks from my school. I went and introduced myself and talked with the team for an hour. They invited me back that night for dinner with them and to document them. I met with them a few times after and documented that particular team for their routines. I did a few oil relatively quick oil sketches from observing my own photography. These will lead to other more developed pieces. I hope you enjoy! Oil on stretched canvas all of them adding up to 2 canvases filled, 18x24 inches each.

Young Hunter

Here is a portrait I created of my friend Lee. I had him pose this past summer and was going to be part of a series of portraits I was going to complete for practice. I finally got around to making one and finishing it to add to that collection. I wanted to try some new things, like the complementary colors and the thickly painted abstract background. I hope you enjoy this as much as my friend did! 26x14 inches on stretched linen.

Approaching Camp

Here is an original Oil painting I created from a photograph I took when I was in Maine this past September for a dear friends wedding. I've been looking for a chance to paint me some birch trees! I loved painting this and I hope you enjoy it too. Approaching camp is showing the beauty of early fall in Maine on a nice crisp mid-morning. 24x18 inches on stretched canvas.

Fishing In Turner Maine

Here is an original oil painting on stretched canvas that I created 16x20inches of my friend Jake fishing when I was staying with him this past May. I used some photographs I took to create this early vision of him fishing early in the foggy Maine morning. I hope you enjoy!

Plein air in front of the Made By store

I was invited to paint in front of the new Made By store, for the Rosemary District celebration. I was only there for an hour and a half for I had to make it back to school in time for my class at 7. Struggling with people, the failing light, some rain drops, this is what I managed to create in an hour's time! I also was able to sell it too! :) Oil on stretched canvas, 10x8 inches. I entitled it Rosemary District. Hope you enjoy!

Digging For Bones

Here is another original illustration I created for Illustration class showing the wonder and awe of a child playing in his backyard. I loved dinosaurs when I was younger and would dig for bones in my backyard. I took those nostalgic emotions and created this interpretation of my memories! I want to do some more to the fore ground, resolve the toys a little more. I hope you enjoy! Oil on stretched canvas 24x18 inches.

ps- I never found any bones. Well, not dinosaur bones anyways haha.

Buying Flowers on Lime Street

Here is an assignment I created for Illustration class depicting a romantic moment in time. I had my lovely girlfriend photograph me buying flowers and used additional original photography to aid me in creating this. Oil on stretched canvas 20x16 inches. I hope you enjoy!

Holocaust Assignment

During my fall semester senior year I attended a holocaust class that was very informative and worthwhile. Here is an art piece that I created linking the Jewish Holocaust with four other genocides. The idea with the toothbrushes were taking from the tragedy of the Nazi occupation of Austria when they forced ideal men and women of noble occupations whom were Austrian Jews to go into the streets and scrub them with toothbrushes. There is more I'd like to do with this concept. I hope you enjoy at least my graphic hand studies. 16 x 20 inches on stretched canvas.

In Class Portrait Studies

Here are some oil on stretched canvas portrait studies ranging from 10x8 inches to 11x18 inches. All done from 3-1 hours each, hoping to learn something new while doing each one. I hope you enjoy!

Helados 2

Here is an original oil painting on stretched canvas 20x16 inches that I created from a photograph I took while took in my stay in Mexico last holiday season. I recently finished this piece. I wanted to do another version from the one I previously finished last may. I wasn't happy with the prior one, so I stepped it up and made a better version of it this time around. I kept it loose and with the help of my independent study professor, I tried to make interesting mark making. With the littlest rendering as possible to suggest A lot of things, with much emotion. I really enjoyed working on this piece, took a while to complete. I hope you enjoy!

Kindest regards,

Plein air on Lime Street

Here is an oil painting that I created the other day 10X8 inches on stretched canvas of a man and his hot dog stand on the corner of Lime Street here in Sarasota. It was an hour and a half study, which I hope leads to other on the spot hot dog stand paintings and a studio piece.

On another note, for future reference, if you enjoy overly approachable people while painting outdoors, paint next to a bus station like I did for this piece, lol.

I Hope you enjoy!

Self-Portrait October 2009-complete

Here is an oil painting on stretched canvas that I completed from looking in a mirror. I wanted some good practice and what better than looking in a mirror and a free model! I surrounded myself with some of my closest friends, and family in the picture frames in the background (I apologize if I didn't add you, you know who you are!) But my main goal was to make a successful self-portrait, and of course, to overcome the problems that I faced. I hope you enjoy, I sure enjoyed painting it!

Setting Up-final piece

Here is an original oil painting 24X30 inches on stretched canvas that I created for Illustration class. Same piece as the previous 'Setting Up' but with a few changes. I mixed in the same colors of the middle ground orange into the background to make it seem more warm and receding. I also used broader brush strokes in the foreground to suggest some closer perspective. In addition i added some more foliage above the umbrella in the distance, so there would be more dark against the lighter valued umbrella in hopes to 'pop' it out more. Lastly, I added some branches and leaves in the foreground tree.

I also was fortunate enough to have this piece selected to be in the 'Illest of Ill' show tomorrow night here at Ringling College of Art and Design!

I hope you enjoy! Kindest regards- J J NEAGLE

Helados second edition-under drawing

Here is an original painting 16x20 inches on stretched canvas. What you see is just the under drawing with ultramarine blue and burnt umber. I want to attempt alla prima type of painting, where its more expressive and interesting. Typically an alla prima painter wouldn't have gone as far as I did for an under drawing such as this, they most likely would have just did a basic block in and then went from there, as I did a more approximate block in. Wish me luck!

A start to a self-portrait from life

Here is the start to my self-portrait from life. It is on stretched canvas 24X20 inches. I felt I have not had a successful self-portrait, so I decided for an illustration assignment that I would do one from life for good practice. I set up my painting area like a still life, carefully arranging the composition the way I wanted. I covered up the window with prior paintings and a drapery so that the lighting I chose was what I wanted. I will paint this from life, and at nighttime so that the lighting will be consistent. I set up a mirror about the same size as the canvas to the left of the canvas. I originally set did the same size and the composition was initially too split in half and wasn't as interesting as it is now. I repainted the under painting and what you see now is what is currently most recent. I am intimidated by my stare and hope my expectations will pay off. Wish me luck!

Plein air in the Marina

Here is a 9X12 inch painting on stretched canvas. I painted this, this afternoon in the marina here in Sarasota. I wanted to get out and do some practice and here it is. A little less than 2 hours, i painted the 3 boats and the surroundings. I had a hard time at first picking out what i wanted to paint, and i just eventually picked this. I feel the shapes of the boats could have been better executed, but i wasn't up to par with the boats turning constantly even though they were anchored. I hope you enjoy.

East Road Farm

Here is an original oil painting on stretched canvas 18x24 inches. It depicts an old farm and it's surroundings located on East Road, in Wales, Maine. I was up in Maine a couple weeks ago for a friends wedding and I helped myself to photographing much of what I saw in my duration of stay, since I didn't have my easel with me. I am very satisfied with this piece for I feel it is very successful in a direct, thickly painted and suggestive quality that I have been aiming for in painting in recent history. I hope you enjoy it! More to come

Setting Up

Here is an oil painting i created 24X30 inches of a scene i depicted in downtown Sarasota, on Main Street across from the Hollywood 20 cinemas.

I have seen some nice hot dog stand paintings and was inspired. It seems as though I am into this kind of subject matter. I was crammed
with a short time allotment to do this painting, which I chose to do for Illustration class. The assignment was to be based off an experience, that I in end result used for this piece.

Orange is a pretty new color to me, for I haven't found myself using it that often. I experimented with it this time and i feel as though the painting came out in a fashion that i wanted it to, as in a large mass of cool and a large mass of warm. I wanted to paint in a thicker and somewhat of a direct manner, but i feel as though i failed that. I can see my old style popping through now, and my intention was simplified realism, and this is almost a bit like a cartoon. Well you be the judge. I hope you enjoy regardless. There will be more to come!

East Road-more progress

I am really enjoying working on this piece so far. Some more progress on this one, i have been really working on thicker paint, interesting mark making, utilizing my palette knives more for lines and edge control. Still a good bit more to go, wish me luck! Hope you enjoy it so far.

Curly

Here is an in-class study of a lady in my portraiture class. It was a two session painting, 4 hours in all. I was going for thicker paint and a decent likeness. 11x1 4 inches on canvas. I hope you enjoy.

'Setting Up'-Main Street Sarasota

Here is the before and after of my progress thus far in my illustration class painting. It is a self generated assignment. I have been very interested in this kind of subject matter. Right now i am working on 24x30 inch canvas of a scene on Main Street in Sarasota. The first pictue I started a under tone and start to draw out the composition and the start of thicker paint application. After some more thought, i scraped out the painted umbrella and changed up the design of the composition, i felt it would be better to move the hot dog stand over, so it was overlapping the truck in the background.

PLEASE excuse the color difference, it wont be that red latter on.

Stay tuned for a complete piece!

Main Street Study Revision

Here is a small plein air painting that i did of Main Street Sarasota. I hope you enjoy!

East Road-Wales, Maine

Here is an oil painting 18X24 on stretched canvas. I am very pleased with this piece thus far. I've been really wanting to paint well for a long time, as in really thinking about each stroke that I apply. I have been attempting to put what i have learned up to present date and apply what I'd like to do. Thicker paint, interesting mark making, in a realistic way, but simplified. In progress right now, much more to come. Hope you enjoy!
